Just as bitmap graphic fonts can be divided into bitmap fonts or raster fontsvector graphic fonts can be divided into outline fonts or vector fonts. Characters or glyphs in a bitmap font are made up of pixels. Every character is represented by a bitmapor a collection of pixelshence the name bitmap font. Bitmap fonts are used in embedded systems where computation power is low; the information of a character is very small, and the individual pixels can be drawn very quickly.

As with scaling pixel art illustrationsscaling a bitmap font results in loss of quality. Bitmap fonts look their best when the size equals the purpose-made size. If a system needs a different size of a particular bitmap fontthen the bitmap font with the new size has to be made separately for the best results.

The great benefit of outline fonts compared with bitmap fonts is scaling without loss of quality.

pixel font

An outline font can be scaled to any preferred size, and the quality will remain the same. The standard for the description of the outline font is Adobe PostScript. Postscript is also used in Adobe Illustrator. This requires a lot of processing power, and is done by a so-called RIP : a raster image processor.

A commonly used technique to increase the quality of the outline font is anti-aliasing. Anti-aliasing is used to prevent ' jagged edges '; trapped, most of the time asymmetrical, hard edges around the outline of the font. This works fine if the font size is not too small. By using supersampling a single pixel is divided into subpixels.

In this example a grid is used, but other types of division can be used as well. The intensity of all subpixels combined is used to calculate the intensity of the individual pixel. The amount of subdivision can be adjusted; more subpixelsmeans more calculations. In the next example the outline font on the left is shown without anti-aliasing ; the outline font on the right is shown with anti-aliasing.

The name pixel font is a bit misleading. The name suggests that pixel fonts are bitmap fontsbut this is not always true. A bitmap font is by definition a pixel fontbut an outline font can be a pixel font as well. The borders of an outline font can be equal to the edges of the pixels on the screen. Anti-aliasing these fonts produces no visual effect; the individual pixels of a character are either black or white, not shaded in between, which makes the characters look crisp. Bitmap Fonts Characters or glyphs in a bitmap font are made up of pixels.

Is it some sort of hack? Are you copying and pasting an actual font? Well, the answer is actually no - rather than generating fancy fontsthis converter creates fancy symbols. The explanation starts with unicode ; an industry standard which creates the specification for thousands of different symbols and characters. All the characters that you see on your electronic devices, and printed in books, are likely specified by the unicode standard.

Amongst the hundreds of thousands of symbols which are in the unicode text specifications are certain characters which resemble, or are variations of the alphabet and other keyword symbols. These different sets of fancy text letters are scattered all throughout the unicode specification, and so to create a fancy text translator, it's just a matter of finding these sets of letters and symbols, and linking them to their normal alphabetical equivalents.

Unicode has a huge number of symbols, and so we're able to create other things like a wingdings translator too.

The only exception is if your paste destination has a font which doesn't support some unicode characters. For example, you'll might find that some websites don't use a unicode font, or if they do, the font doesn't have all the characters required.

In that case, you'll see a generic "box" in which was created when the browser tries to create a fancy letter. This doesn't mean there's an error with this translator, it just means the website's font doesn't support that character.

First of all, you have to make sure that you know how many pixels a pixel font should be.

pixel font

Usually, the font designer will tell you this. Some fonts are 7 pixels, some are 5 some are 9 etc… You have to either have them be exactly this size, or a multiple of this number. For example, a 7 pixel font will look good at 14 pixels as well. It will be pixelated looking, but many people like this look. Take a look at the following image. I have written a few lines of text using a couple of different pixel fonts.

Some are sized exactly, and others are not. You can see how difficult they are to read when they are not the correct size.

Sometimes you can experiment with different sizes to see how they look. But very rarely does a pixel font allow you to deviate from the recommended size. Also pay attention to the lines that say they have antialiasing turned on. Antialiasing is a way to make your fonts look smooth by adding pixels to the edges of themin lighter and lighter shades until they fade out to nothing.

They will get very blurry and impossible to read. The only way to make them look perfect is to turn the antialiasing off. Below is you upper options palette in Photoshop.
